Exploring Amalfi Coast Part 1: Naples & Sorrento

Since we haven’t been travelling recently, I have been spending quite a lot of time looking at old photos and reminiscing about the beautiful places we have been to and the amazing local cuisines we have had along the way.

With a bit more time on my hands, I thought of doing another blog post about one of our trips. Italy is an all time favourite country of ours, and the country we have visited the most. So I thought I’d start with the trip to the Amalfi Coast in June 2015, right after Amana was done with one of her endless exams (FYI she is studying/training to become a chartered accountant).

As it was a 4 day trip, I decided I will make it a 2 post blog just so that it doesn’t become too long. As such, the first part is about our first 2 days in Naples and Sorrento.

Keeping in line with most of our posts, we will try to keep the narrative short and pictures galore, because let’s be honest we’re not the best with words.

10th June

We flew into Naples early morning on 10th June and had arrived at the hotel around 10:30am. (Btw we almost missed our morning flight as we both slept through the alarms.. Amana having her exams meant that we were both on a weird sleep routine, her more than me, but still..) We took the airport shuttle bus from the airport to the central station, which costs about €4 and takes 20-30 minutes to get to the central station. If you need more info on other options you can follow the link here. The hotel we stayed in was right next to the station called Stelle Hotel the Businest, which was very convenient, clean and modern. (Something that was a bit hard to find in Naples for our budget)

L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele – A Gastronomic Experience

Since Naples is considered to be the birthplace of pizza, our priority was to get us some good ol’ pizza! And what better place to go than L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele! Ever since Amana watched “Eat, Pray, Love”, she has been craving to go to Naples to have that exact pizza which Julia Roberts (so gracefully?) devours in the movie. It took us 20 minutes to get a seat, but the pizza was well worth the wait! If you could wait 5 years, what’s another 20 minutes anyway??

They serve 2 types of Pizza; margherita and marinara. There are no words to explain how the pizza tasted. The crunchy yet doughy crust, with cheese stringing off the pizza as you take a slice out, and the incredible tomato base, ugh I’m drooling just thinking about it, it was heaven on earth! I had the Margherita and Amana had the Marinara as she is all about the garlic. Both just as excellent, it only cost €7 euros each, with a drink included as well! Cannot recommend this place enough. Both in terms of taste AND price!!!

After one hell of a gastronomic experience, we set out to explore the city of Naples.

11th June

We set out to get the ferry to Sorrento as this was where we decided to base ourselves on this trip. We took the Alilauro Hydrofoil, which takes about 40 minutes, costs €11 each way and is the fastest ferry from Naples to Sorrento. It was a long walk up to the hotel, but we absolutely loved the hotel/guest house we stayed in Sorrento, which had a nice little garden area just for the two of us. The hotel is called Green House and is highly rated on Booking.com. Once checked in, we set off to explore Sorrento!

On the way to take the ferry to Sorrento
Off to Sorrento!
SORRENTO!
Decided to walk up hill about 20 minutes to the hotel. There were buses running as well.
Our little garden! The room was nice and clean as well. Forgot to take photos!
Time to explore Sorrento.
Shocked by the size of the lemons! Sorrento and the region in general is very famous for its lemons.
Just making sure it’s real haha
Sorrento is a typical coastal Italian town perched up in the mountains with winding roads down to the coast.
Always use zebra crossings! 😛
Time for some gelato! Always have at least 1 gelato A DAY when you’re in Italy!
The infamous Mt. Vesuvius in the background
In love with Bougainvillea! <3
Even the wall murals are of people picking lemons 😀
A little lemon farm.

One of the things that we found was that Sorrento was teeming with tourists, probably there for the same reason as us. Which is that the accommodation rates were better compared to other towns in Amalfi Coast plus it was a good hub for visiting all the other cities/towns including Capri.

That’s it for the first part of our trip to the Amalfi Coast. Stay tuned for the next part, which includes Capri, Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. Sign up via email or follow us on Instagram to be in the know when the next part comes out later this week!

Happy Travels!
